“A River of Travels for You”
A Multi-sensory Trip in Friuli Venezia Giulia
4 days: from May 16th to 19th 2019
SCHEDULE
Thursday May 16th 2019
We’ll be waiting for you in the very first afternoon at the Cervignano railway station, to start our tour through Friuli Venezia Giulia!
First stop: Cividale Del Friuli. Our guide will introduce us to the city starting from the characteristic Devil’s Bridge on the Natisone river, which, as the legend recounts, was built by the devil in exchange for the soul of the first passer-by. We will enter the Christian Museum which preserves the most famous sculptures of Lombardic art: the Ara di Ratchis (touch-sensitive visit on both the original and on a completely handable reproduction measuring 50 x 30 cm) and the Baptistery of Callisto. We will then stop at the International Center “Vittorio Podrecca – Maria Signorelli’s Theater of Marvels”, for a fascinating and innovative journey into the magical world of puppets and dolls made by Maria Signorelli and of the ancient puppets of Vittorio Podrecca, who will reveal its secrets.
Finally, we will visit the beautiful Lombardic Temple, the most important and best preserved architectural testimony of the Lombardic period, which preserves a touch-sensitive reproduction of friezes and temple itself. We will carry on by bus to Dolegna del Collio, heading for the Ca’Ronesca Farm, where a special multi-sensory visit will take place and an abundant wine tasting of Collio wines and local products. We will spend the night in a hotel in Palmanova.
Friday May 17th 2019
Breakfast and departure for Gorizia, a border town, a stone’s throw from Slovenia. Visit of Palazzo Coronini Cronberg, historic residence dating back to the end of the sixteenth century. Walking through the fifteen rooms along the museum route, including the room where Charles X of Bourbon died, the last king of France in 1836, the visitor is magically transported back in time, thanks to the warm and suggestive atmosphere of the rooms with five and seventeenth-century furnishings on the ground floor, with the sumptuous eighteenth-century sitting rooms, the empire rooms and the nineteenth-century rooms of the noble floor.
The touch-sensitive experience is engaging: ornaments, silverware, porcelain, crystals, photographs, portraits and everyday objects recreate the atmosphere of a truly lived-in house, allowing to perceive the presence of the former owners in every room. The visit to the city will continue with the Jewish ghetto and the Synagogue, which we will discover ritual objects, artifacts, books, photographs, documents and prints relating to the history of Jewish Gorizia and its representatives. Gorizia was an important town in the heart of Central Europe and, as in other cities of this area, the Jewish presence has quite ancient roots here too. Finally we will have a tasting of kosher food and wine.
We will carry on to Trieste, a unique city for its beauty and its particular atmosphere. As a crossroads of different cultures, it has evolved by mixing all its facets and thus becoming a real jewel. The visit will start from Colle San Giusto, where the Cathedral, the most important Catholic religious building in Trieste, is located. The gabled façade is characterized by a large double wheel rose window, a statue of San Giusto, coats of arms and a portal resulting from the cutting of a Roman funerary stele. We will head towards Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest square in Europe. Shadows of James Joyce, Saba, Svevo, accompanied by jazz notes. Coffee scent and the whisper of the sea, which smelled and heard from the square. The perfection of the precious facades surrounding the square, do not fear the beauty of the gulf in front of them or the violent power of the Bora wind, which blows forcefully around here, from March to October.
At the end we will move up to the Karst for a visit to a winery with a cellar dug into the karst rock and we will gave a small tasting of the wines produced here. We will have dinner in an agritourism overlooking a typical dolina.
We will spend the night in the hotel.
Saturday May 18th 2019
After breakfast we will head towards Aquileia, capital of the X Regio Venetia Et Histria. We will visit on foot the town founded in 181 BC, with an archaeological area of exceptional importance, considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guide will tells us how the excavations have brought to light the remains of the Roman forum and a basilica, of the burial ground and of mosaic floors. The splendid Basilica of S. Maria Assunta preserves the famous early Christian mosaics (4th century), which our guide will have us relive with great pathos, by describing the symbolism.
We will have then lunch at the restaurant and move on to the National Archaeological Museum, which houses exhibits that display the craft and economy of the ancient Roman city of Aquileia with an unprecedented sensory journey, which will combine visual observation with scents, sounds, tastes and touch-sensitive perceptions. Last but not least a delicious surprise, right in the heart of Aquileia: in the brand new Cocambo we will discover and taste the wonderful chocolate of Mr. Piero!
A pleasant walk in Grado will mark the end of the day. The scent of salt can be perceived among the picturesque “calli” of the historic center and the ancient early Christian Basilica is a jewel to be discovered.
Dinner at the restaurant and return to Palmanova for overnight stay.
Sunday May 19th 2019
Breakfast and departure for Venzone, a charming fortified village with medieval features. In 1965 Venzone was declared a national monument of great historical and artistic interest and ironically, in 1976, it was almost entirely destroyed by earthquakes on May 6th and September 15th. The visit here will be truly multi-sensory! We will enter the Duomo, pearl of this village, in French Gothic style.
Here we can touch everything and really understand what the earthquake was: the admirable stone-on-stone reconstruction has become an international example. We will enter Palazzo Orgnani-Martina, home of the accessible Museum of Venzone, which houses the permanent exhibition “Tiere Motus. History of an earthquake and its people “. The exhibition keeps the events connected with the devastating earthquake alive and the video reproduces the terrible sounds of the collapse.
We then make a culinary stop at San Daniele del Friuli, a citadel perched on a gentle hill, famous for its prized ham. We will find out, accompanied by an expert producer, the process of making ham, especially with an olfactory visit to a traditional establishment. The tasting of the mythical raw ham will complete the experience.
In the afternoon we will take you to the FS train station in Udine to return to your destination and … see you again in Friuli Venezia Giulia for the next tour!
